BP,

As long as you don't show them your stores and perhaps share a small meal with them as a sign of humanity then be clear that is it then if they don't respect that then out come the pitchforks and tada the next weeks meal is ready to be cooked.

trouble with that SD, is that they then know where you are located and can come back with more people next time, which is why i favour the "total isolation in deep, deep countryside" approach(unless you are saying we must "do away" with any visitors in order to keep our location secret)?
I agree with the isolation as 1st cover but when they are there and you are conversing each situation needs to be evaluated. If you can make out you are barely making it and share a meal that should get them on their way, not everyone as you say, and the chances are they won't be back. If they met someone else, a gang, and said where you are then there may be a visit but that risk is there anyway from them coming through.

I just don't think bumping people off for no reason is a good strategy. Sometime you will have no options and you will be forced into a situation. However, it is always an option. It's just not my first thought.

sorry, got the wrong end of the stick, i thought that WAS what you were saying!Tongue our B.O. location is "well off the beaten track" so hopefully visitors will be few and far between!
LOL. We all beat around the bush so the whingey whiners don't get upset and it causes confusion.
Confused

From an operational security point of view - then - meeting and greeting is tantamount to suicide..mass suicide.

( cue whingeing humanists and do-gooders etc )

From a humanitarian point of view then meeting and greeting is vital to re-establish some form of a social structure....but again , is totally suicidal when you factor in supplies and the escalating chance that your safe area will be compromised.

From a realistic , survival viewpoint - you have a set amount of supplies for an exact amount of people. local resources may be sketchy at best.
More people = less food = less chance of survival.

It would be lovely to be all nicey, nicey - welcome to our commune , have some anti-biotics and make sure you cram in those carbs from our foodstores...but all that will do will get you killed very very quickly when people assume your a soft touch and there for the taking.

Sorry dreamers , if you want to survive then the only people you can afford to bring onboard will be like-minded individuals with usable skills.
End of.

To think otherwise is silly.
What about factoring into the growth and settlement plans, a section that means we can accomodate more people?

Granted there will be limited resources and the alike, but if we were able to provide for an additional bunch of people, e.g. land, housing, places for them to grow crops, seeds to help them grow, and stuff like that, then it would be a huge development towards the recreation of society.
Anyone surviving long enough who is not doing so from raiding others must be at least worth speaking to in a safe environment.

Remember we are hiding here by default. We will only get caught out because we think things have settled down.

How long we talking about here? Weeks, months?
Is raiding the same as scavenging?

What you going to do if a couple of technical's turn up at your gates?
Say a dozen men, good personal weapons, hardened, with training?
They'll look round, suss you out, and probably take what they want.
I would.

Settled down it'll never be because 'those left standing' will evolve into basic hunter gatherers and if they've got ammo, you'll be seen as a potential supply dump.

Even if differnet groups meld and form co-operatives, they'll still be drifters.

Some will have training and will probably have more and bigger guns than you. You can't shoot them all. Once they start to seige you, you're finished.

Guys,

Meeting and greeting is not tantamount to suicide. If you think beforehand and prepare for it. Meet at a neutral location that you don't have stores at. Talk to them, get their story. How have they survived so far? Find out what they want? What can you do to help them? It may be somthing simple that is not a problem for you yet may be critical to them.

It could be you if things don't work out so don't just reject drifters out of hand.
