Sorry if any of these have come up before...
1. Where can I get foodsafe buckets with lids, as well as mylar bags, oxygen absorbers etc? I have found a few kits for sale but they seem very expensive
2. Where can I get canning jars? I ask because I want to be able to reuse preserving stuff, instead of falling into the trap of buying a whole heap of food and eating through it all only to be left with useless tins.
3. Are online grocers like rosspa and Shorters a good idea? They seem very cheap, and shorters sell stuff in bulk, but does delivery null any savings?

bing!

hope they help somewhat, i'd also look into these

http://www.amazon.com/The-Other-Side-Vap..._sbs_hpc_3

they are really quite awesome, totally air tight, good quality glass, and tinted to stop uv and blot out most other light, so it should, in theory, stop all the things that degrade food over time, just make sure u fill it right up, so theres little air locked in to oxidise your stores (those jars are also good for storing other things, if you read the description of them you'll get it Wink )

also i'd look into vacuum sealing things and things, they are really cool, also if you look at how MRE's are packaged that may offer some insights for ya in terms of good ways to store food long term Smile
I get buckets & lids from http://www.tools4grp.com/ and mylars absorbers from http://store.lds.org/webapp/wcs/stores/s..._N_image_0 or for smaller quantities http://www.fresherpack.co.uk/. If you search the key words on the forum I think the relevant posts will come up. Wilkos and places like that do the jars. I haven't used rosspa or sites like that yet, but when comparing prices I've often found things cheaper on amazon and at b & m stores.
I think Melissa has the buckets covered.
BP(I think) gave me this link for Mylar bags and Oxygen absorbers

Canning jars are known as preserving jars such as Kilner jars, Le Parfait.
I get most of mine from Morrisons as they seem to be the cheapest.

I've used ROSSPA and their service is very good, but you do need to be aware their tinned stuff doesn't always have a long shelf life left. Their fresh fruit and veg is superb.

Is there a diff between a pressure canning machine and a pressure cooker pot thing? I looked on Ebay and the Us is the only place that does pressure canning machine, even though it looks like a pot, one of our pressure cooker pots.

Yes there is, a Pressure Canner is much bigger and the pressure control is more accurate than a pressure cooker. To 'can' low acid foods such as veg, meats and fish, you need to raise the temperature above boiling point and maintain it for a considerable period of time. Also, the processing time is calculated to include the heating and cooling period of the canner, because a pressure cooker is so much smaller and is made of thinner gauge metal, the heating and cooling times are affected and there may not be sufficient processing to destroy the target bacteria(namely Botulinum). HTH

Is there anywhere I can buy one apart from the US? The shipping is more than the canner

Sigh...Oh well, looks like tinned food for me then Sad
Try Lakeland and there is a Mormon owned company in Wales I believe that keeps pressure and vaccuum canning gear, plus grain mills etc.
