Last week we had a chance to test the UV5r’s FM receiver back to back against our backup communications receiver ( Eton E3).

Result is that the little UV5R with a Nagoya NA774 antenna was able to clearly resolve distant FM broadcast transmissions and was only marginally less sensitive than the Eton.

The UV5r goes from strength to strength in my book. Only drawback is its awkward to program.

*The FM receiver on the UV5r is activated by a short press of the orange button on the left hand side of the radio, above the PTT button.

Usefully, While receiving FM broadcast transmissions, the UV5r continues monitoring the active two-way frequency / channel(s). If a two way radio signal is received, the radio will close down FM reception and switch to the received two-way signal, switching back to the FM broadcast transmission a few seconds after the two way signal ends.
