Don't use one, prefer the versatility of my kukri.

I still have the machette that was issued to me when I was stationed in Malaysia [ Malaya then ], but I have lost the webbing sheath,.... its not a hatchet of course but in many ways its better having got a longer blade,..and possibly lighter,....

Gransfors axes are meant to be superb. I fancy getting a tomahawk/throwing axe

Khukuri all the way!!!

Weapon, chopper, knife (comes with utility knife and sharpener / fire striker all in the same sheath)!
Forget the hatchet.

Paul has my support in this one.

By the way, Paul, which manufacturer made yours? I need to get one and am a bit unsure...

Mines an 1973 Gurkha issue so you'll struggle to beat it.

IMO the cheapy £29 (ish) Cold steel version isn't much cop.

The Ka-Bar Machete Kukri is a beast though. £60-70 (ish)
Watch your fingers with this one. I used a mates one straight out of the packing and sliced my thumb for two stitches worth.
Never known a kukri so sharp.

He uses a puck stone to keep his kukri sharp.
Me, I use the chakmak (little blunt edge knife) that came with mine to keep the edge nice.
His rusts so needs oiling, mine doesn't.

Best shop? Probably http://www.heinnie.com
Never let me down.

Any help?

I just saw a huge kukri from the kukri house.
Damn it is massive!

Need to check it out a bit more...
Keep you posted.
Thanks for the link, Paul. Nice new location to check out.

I have 2 modified Tramontina machetes (from heinne, amazing for £8!). I was looking into hatchets myself and am probably going to get a Husqvarna hatchet to see how I feel with it.

I love renovating old tools, several years ago I came across an old US army hatchet head, I made and fitted an extra long ash handle, it has lovely balance and I could fell a decent size tree with it if I needed to, I would not swap it for any other, tried to do the same with another old hatchet head since, but just could not get the balance right.
