You can store rice easily enough in plastic screw top barrels. There is a blog on the net (somewhere) from a guy who survived the conflict in Yugoslavia IIRC. For three or for years, rice or a simple bic lighter were worth more than their weight in gold. One of the best assets you have are your personal skills... they will trade well if in demand.

Be careful of the plastic rice from China, always buy the Californian rice.
It is better quality anyway
