That has huge potential to be abused. But I guess that's why SD is being thorough about choosing the mods. Maybe just quoting the useful part of the post and deleting the original would be a better idea.

True, but I don't think they would last long (as a mod) if they acted in that way. However I see your concern, so maybe straight deletion of the post would be the only option, as even if part of the post was reposted, there is still the potential to modify what was originally stated.

I've been a moderator since the beginning and only once have I had to do anything (delete some personal, non prepping thread) SD usually is on the case way before me!

A question; when we notice a thread being driven off topic, or a post made that has little to do with the OP. What can we as members do about it? Is this what the report button is for?

That's why I Proposed an OFF TOPIC smiley.
Maybe we just appropriate one from the selection, like this
OFF TOPIC

Why muck about with a smiley when there's a 'Report' button?

Hi BoB,
Good to see you active on here again.
Reporting and getting moderator attention to every time a thread goes off course will soon result in no moderation at all.
I honestly believe that a good deal of misdirection of threads is down to individuals communication style.
I still think that an OFF TOPIC response and not engaging further with the diversion is the best way.
The report button will work best if reserved for major infringements.
