Bugging out??

Very true Paul, but part of prepping is keeping your eye on the ball, gaining the advantages of knowledge and speed and getting out before the mayhem, hopefully this would afford me time and a car that still works to get out of dodge with a good supply, depends on the event, but I also plan for on foot
But we are in very different situations you and I, me and most come to that, your location is much safer then mine, say in case of pandemic, you could bug in,when I start seeing the death rates rising round the world then in London I'm going camping,! social unrest, fires, rioting ,all gets a bit to close to home here, if I lived out in the sticks I'd be bugging in with a good hiding place close by.

This is why it's a good idea to store / bury some caches of food or supplies along escape routes to your bug out location, less chance of them being discovered and because you have spread them out less chance of them all being found!

That's exactly my view. I thought the idea of making a cache was because we can't carry everything we want to. To me, it makes sense to bury a LOAD of stuff in caches in the garden! If the home is hit and you lose everything inside, you still have a garden of stuff to get back to. Moreover, you know where your house is, and how easy it would be to get back there after a few months time.

I don't think many homes will be hit multiple times. A house will be focused on once, then it will be in a really bad state. People will then leave. Others won't come along, see the home all smashed up and think "Hey, I wonder if there's food in there?" They're going to think "Damn, someone beat us to it. Okay, let's move to the next house." But they're not going to spend all day digging up your garden.

The same is true with alotments. People will dig an alotment, but they won't be digging down 6 feet under the shed.

When I get a suitable BOL, I'm going to be caching it up with like a years worth of food, as well as planting edible plants/trees in the area. The idea of a BOL is to escape and be safe. If you're bugging out, you need to be able to get to your BOL in a few days. You can't really carry a years worth of food with you. But you can arrive at your BOL and have a years worth of food waiting for you.

Ideally you want 4 modest caches located on the 4 points of the compass with your home at the center of the compass.

The principle Bug Out place we have in mind is about 6-7 miles from here, its a farm workers cottage which hasn't been lived in for 5-8 years and its still part furnished, it has 3 good bedrooms and a fireplace in the living room but most of all it has a LARGE PANTRY, good sized gardens which are partly overgrown. it is down a single track lane( most people would think it a farm track) the best part of a mile away from any "through" road, the only habitation is 1 house just as you turn in and the farmhouse( which the cottage belongs to) about 2-300 yards down the road, after that its probably another half a mile to some farm buildings. the only daily traffic is the postie and apart from that the odd tractor maybe once or twice a week. i reckon its 20-25 minutes away in a car on country roads in normal traffic, we MAY be able to walk it in a day but maximum of a day and a half, taking shelter in unused abandoned barns on the way.

BP, why don't you cache at the barns, then when you BO, you can get to your BOL, then return to the barns as recce trips, and to pick up supplies. You don't want to be picking them up on the way, because you need speed to get there and hunker down in the first place.

You should really cache stuff in the overgrown garden, simply because it means you will always have something on site.

i'm thinking of doing something similar Scythe but i'm currently trying to get an up to date map of the area showing all the footpaths so that i can plan a route, once i know the route and possible stopping places i will recce the route and find where best to leave any caches. there are various ways of getting there so i want to plan alternative routes in case 1 or more are blocked on the day.

That's a good plan. I need to pick up some maps of the Bristol/Bedminster area.

Have you tried the walk with full BOB's yet?

nope, like i say i want to get the maps first.
