RE: Fly Fishing
I am at the point where fishing IS using my time to the optimum!

The house is rigged out, the crops are in, the big chores are done, nothing is fit to hunt at this time of year (parasites), I might as well walk down to the lake and drop a line in. Even a small fish stretches out the Ramen noodles and gives them a bit of flavor change.

The presence of a large lake 1/4 mile from my home is one of the main reasons I chose to live where I am.

Fishing was always in the plan as both food gathering and recreation.

But not fly fishing.

Our local common species do not take flies well. They are more the worm, grub, cricket, small frog and dough-ball varieties.

Agree!

My small parcel of land has frontage on Back Creek, which has trout in season and bass most of the time.

It is pleasureable to walk out the kitchen door only 200 metres to catch my breakfast.

Neighbor's pond is full of Bluegills, which are great fun with popping bugs and a light flyrod, and good eating, though bony and enough keeper bass to keep life interesting.
