Alternative clubs

Everyone knows about the Scouts and Guides. There used to be others which kids used to go to where they could learn about guns, wildcraft, etc.

Any other clubs or societies in the UK that we could consider sending our children to? Those that don't have advanced spoon polishing as their top badge.

I used to take kids out myself shooting and walking but think it is illegal now without government approval.

I was in the Army Cadets as a young teen. Lots of guns, camping, roughing it, abseiling, map reading etc

Mind you that was 30 odd years ago, it might have changed since then

Before the development of the Boy Scouts there were two organisations in America. One was led by Dan Beard and the other by Ernest Seton. Beards organisation was the Sons of Danial Boon and the other I cannot recall to mind at this moment. If you go to http://www.inquiry.net you will find all the information. There were other groups as well, The Campaigners and others I can no longer remember. Most were based on a camping and woodcraft theme. The great problem today is that you have to have Government clearance before you can run a group. Kenneth Eames.

Army Cadets, Sea Cadets, Air Cadets, Girls Venture Corps, Horse Rangers, Boys/Girls Brigade.

You may find 'specialised' groups:- Royal Yachting Association, mountaineering/climbing clubs, archery clubs etc.

In addition, some Bushcraft/Survival Schools do 'Young Survivors' courses. I took my grandson on the Trueways Young Survivalist course two years ago.

Not so much as a club but a camp where we send our kids most school holidays, One is PGL and the other is Camp Beaumont, both are cheapish holiday camps where kids learn all sorts of practical skills and team building, and if you book late or go for the special offers you can often farm the little darlings out for a week for under £200. My 13 year old has been about five times now. Does archery, shooting, cooking, team tasks, basic survival, raft building etc etc

I suppose I've been quite lucky really regarding my two lads, ones just left home so we've actualy got some food left in the cupboards, the other is in air cadets, and there basic weapons trained, and they do listen...sometimes.
Sometimes you look back and think how much easier it was just prepping for yourself, but if you look at it another way at least families can be a modest combat unit of some description. Not just the one person on stag all the time.. mind you with them being teenagers you do have to keep prodding their brains awake as the tend not to use them a lot at that age...
