Exclamation  NR needs information on certain BUDGET compound bows
If you guys dont mind I'll explain my logic later when I've got it sorted in my head, but the help I want is if you see or come across any BUDGET compound bows under say £150 will you check to see if its strung with polyester or other synthetic cord, or is is strung with coated steel wire.

If its strung with steel wire coated or uncoated will you let me know please.

I'm looking at the conceptualising of a utilitarian compound bow and I'm let to believe steel wire strung bows tend to not need restringing as often as twine strung bows.

The more I look at propper compound bows the more impressed i become with them , However its equally true to say to get the best from a compound bow you need to fit all sorts of extras, this means far more to clean, adjust or go wrong with is the antithesis of what a survival bow should be.

Why am I focusing on compounds rather than simple recurves?? not sure but LENGTH is a major concern a preppers EDC bow really needs to be compact for transport, caching, patroling or shooting in confined spaces. And I've not seen and AFFORDABLE compact recurves under 3 ft long that have any useful poundage.

So if you see budget compounds on sale in your local shops etc and they are wire strung, give me the nod please with the make and model.

Ta muchly
NR

I personally would stay well away fro budget compounds mate, and indeed any compound bow. If there is any chance of a full breakdown etc the parts will be very hard to find, you need specialist equipment (bowpress) to change strings. A good hunting recurve is a far better weapon as once you learn to make strings and arrows you are self sufficient.
and besides that compounds are for slack jawed poofters who can't pull a real bowBig Grin

RE: NR needs information on certain BUDGET compound bows
TH my research says the opposite of what your advocating, and my tests with the bows I've got so far more than meet my requirements.

A good hunting recurve is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard except for HUNTING, that does not even remotely cover EDC Security, Patroling, shooting from confined spaces, from inside vehicles, using inside buildings etc.

As for reliability I've had two cases of delamination with the limbs on my KAP recurve and only last wednesday one of the lads at the archery clubs very expensive flat bow fractured with he strung it.

I think reliability is an issue bedeviling all types of bow TBH Smile

Budget compounds can be bulk bought and either discarded or repaired at liesure, they tend to be UNDER 3 ft long, can be held at full draw easily, can be DIY repaired with wire from B & Q. They are easier to use in semi skilled hands and are easier for smaller people like women and teens to use in a survival situation. A decent one piece recurve starts at at least 4ft long, thats just no good for my families needs as my wife is only 5 ft and my son 5 ft 3.

With a wire strung compound I only need wire , snips, crimping tool and a bit of shrink wrap to make a new string Smile I've already got 3 Banshee quads for the price of one decent recurve as well.

Recurve really do have a place in our plans but only as hunting tools I think, just as I've relegated my pistol bows to close quarters stuff.
But for anything else the under one meter length and power of the simpler compounds suits my needs best. I am intending on keeping the compounds to the most basic of layouts though, no folding arrow rests or whisker bisquits, no fancy sights, no trigger mechanisms, silencers, counter weights or other silly bits, and ideally bows with long life coated steel wire strings.

BTW just as I'm typing got an E mail back from Barnett saying they do sell replacement wheel / wire assemblys for the bows so I can always get a few to set aside as spares, but considereing you can buy Banshee quads brand new for a touch over £40......... Smile

Thanks for sharing BTW

Well made recurves do not lose power, mine are still the same after 10-20years of use, its all about quality, you can't make a cheap quality bow shoot as well as a well made one, you can't polish a turd

I think all serve certain specific purposes, but mine is focused on overall use for prepping, not just hunting, or target or vermin control. Thats why I have gone with the compact capability of compounds.

Can we please now get back to the original purpose of this thread IE tagging steel wire strung compounds??
