il miss computers a little, and il miss the internet quiete a bit., couldnt care less about flight cos I never fly and im highly unlikely to go into space.
i think gaining the bird song and seeing all the stars without the light polution will more than make up for losing those two things.
and i havent owned a mobile phone for over 10 years so no loss there.

the skills alone are priceless. not something you can buy.
but those skills probably came with their own costs.
from what ive seen from most soldiers ive met, the costs were pretty high.
but then again, anbything worth having dont come cheap.

or easy

Speaking purely for myself, I'm physically disabled and mentally medicated, for the rest of my life. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

that was the costs I was meaning.

certainly not cheap or easy.

i was told an old saying years ago by my grandad. (wasnt but i classed him as)
Cowards go into war, Men come out of war. but only the truly courageous survive living after it.

I never understood it as a child.
then I realised the cowards were the people on top who never see the battle line
The men are all the young boys that went in and came out changed.
But its the bit that comes after the war that is the hardest to live through.

I've got a few thoughts on that but I'll keep this on-topic, in many cases it's a high price to pay for a skillset but if the world does go to sh1t there will be a very high % of veterans surviving it, they've all done survival courses, they know how to hide and how to acquire resources, they have a cool head in a crisis and they just won't quit.

how the hell do i edit a post? :S

RE: What are you most grateful for?
there wil be a very large portion of veterans that not only survive, but suddenly find themselves being very usefull to a lot of people
there will be stuff in your head that can only be learned from living it,
all the planning in the world wont give that.

and like you said, theres an instinct inside you that wont quit.
that alone can be very inspirational to others.

chances are its ex veterans that people would turn to for protection ,
there aint many civis that can make a good battle or defence plan, some veterans can probably do it in their sleep.

when organisation fails, we either run around like headless chickens and die, or follow someone that actually has a clue,
and thats usually someone whos had good training. (soldiers)

i dont agree (entirely), whilst i have the greatest respect for anyone who served in the forces, Ex and even Serving forces will die just as easily as civilians if there is no food available, or if the water is polluted. if its winter time and the supply of food is cut off, nothing coming in, it dosent matter who or what you were before the collapse, you are all subject to the same problems.

RE: What are you most grateful for?
an unprepped soldier has a far greater chance than an unprepped civi.
and an unprepped soldier wouldnt be unprepped for long. (due to training)
where a civi wouldnt know where to start after an event if they had made no oplans previously.
we all have plans , most civis dont.
