I think this is another one of these scare stories, the piece seems to be saying that the leaking gas is intelligent, and that it knows to only leak in the countryside and not under towns or villages,.... yeh right, lets prep for this too
A major part of survival is invisibility.

I remember one of the earthquakes from it. I was nodding off on the couch and felt a rumble. I nearly browned my pants. In my semi-asleep head i though we were being burgled and jumped up searching the house with a kitchen knife. Ha ha.
