IMHO, the best way is the way the old Indian tribes and most European tribes worked. You worked for the good of the tribe, all sharing the skills and resources, good times and bad. When it comes to wanting something from another tribe, you trade/barter for it. Horses and Livestock were used a lot for this. Another currency could be salt - The Roman Legionaires were partly paid in salt.

No money - the system doesnt work, I would not like to see its repeat again post TEOTWAWKI.
