It is a very clever and simple idea,..one to put on the back burner so to speak

You would need some size fire to get it to temperature, plus, you run the risk of galvanic poisoning. I have cooked legs of lamb and legs, shoulders and bellys of pork wrapped in foil and put in the embers of fire many times with great success.

You can even get away with a layer of foil, several of damp newspaper and then another layer or two of foil.
