The 'deep frozen siberian smallpox scabs' are something that was part of some thriller novel I have read.

It is plausible, but not a proven thing. It is all to do with closeness of contact. Siberian ground would have to thaw so the corpses would float up, corpses disturbed by scavengers and carrion that caused you to come in direct contact or other animals that can get diseases of a similar type - for example cows - that the pass it on to you.

As far as I knew smallpox was around 10,000 years old and came about through contact with camels as they were domesticated.
