A simple test for purity regarding alcohol is the flame (test). High strength alcohol burns with a blue flame. Impure alcohol burns with a yellow flame. The first portion of your run from a still will contain Acetone, methanol etc, which is why you throw it away or keep it for cleaning. This will burn Yellow. When you start to hit the Ethanol it will change to Blue. This is the old School safe method for testing. These days we calculate by volume and percentage to get a more accurate reading that enables use to know exactly how much we need to collect.
Being able to make your own high proof alcohol, for consumption and cleaning is highly recommended, is very easy to make and do, and it will save you a fortune.
