Plan to learn on the job, or have it all sorted first?

Plan to learn on the job, or have it all sorted first?
This is an interesting question, because it covers so broad an area.

When it comes to skill sets that you think you'll need for the first year after 'the event', do you plan on learning as you go along, building on what you already know? Or do you plan to have all the basics down pat, so you know them well in advance.

As an example, learning to fix clothing is a great skill, but in the first year of post-event life, you'll probably not really need it. However, first aid is an important skill that you'll almost definitely need in the first year of life post SHTF.

How do you plan on these kinds of things?

Another example, planting and agriculture. Do you plan on 'learning on the job' or do you plan to have it all sorted before hand?

Please don't just focus on these few examples. The skills required are huge and varied, so expand your answer beyond the new examples I've provided.

Sorry, but the person stumbling around without the needed skills is not known as the poor fellow learning as he goes and doing the best he can,

He is known as the fool living down the road!

In 18 months he will be known as one of the losses of the first year.

You'd be amazed at what you can pick up "on the job" though.

If you've a decent basic skillset you can turn your hand to almost anything.

Agriculture is something i do need to brush up on, in a big way

I completely agree with you on this Binnie.

Its impossible to know everything about everything. We need strong knowledge n some areas and good foundation knowledge in others.

Mortblanc is also right, people who think they do not need to learn stuff and that they can adapt to whatever challenge confronts them will fail sooner or later.

A decent basic skill set is key. The more advanced and the broader reaching the skill set the greater chance of success.

Or you won't and you won't get a second chance to try again....because of the survive or die options.

In the full blown end of the world scenario you folks like to envision

there is no second place finisher
there is no prize for participation
they do not stop keeping score when the other team gets too far ahead
no one makes other people share
there is no one to stop other people from taking your stuff

The lack of one's ability to "know everything", be everywhere and do everything is the reason cultivation of a community or group is essential.

The reason human childhood lasts so long is because humans needed a safe and protected social group to teach them the skills needed for basic survival with specialization of skills evident even in hunter gatherer groups for over a million years.

It is even more necessary as the technology advances past the stone age level.
