will greece jump into bed with russia
what do you think Greece will do.

take Russian cash

take even more euro cash [this comes with even more hard cuts]

go it alone and start a fresh with their own printed money.

our tv news says that uk banks are safe because they have little investment in greek banks....what they do not say is the banks that have lent them money ....are our banks involved with them.

Does the EU contract allow for succession?

If Greece decides to succeed what is to be done about it other than a military invasion and permanent occupation of the State by EU federal troops.

There is historical precedent for the situation which we call the American Civil War. Our Union had to get the status of member units worked out and it took a war to do it.

I do not see the EU having the stomach for a war to enforce their dominion on a member State. I may be wrong, since Greece would be an easy takeover and establish a precedent for keeping others, like GB, in check with regard to retaining a semblance of independence.

What would really suck would be if the population of Greece rose up to fight a guerilla war against an EU invader, and did it successfuly. They had the reputation as fierce fighters back in WW2.

To the long range observer it seems obvious that the southern fringe of the EU has its economic base as tourism and the northern areas manufacturing and service. When times get bad and holidays are cancelled the resort areas take a hard hit. That is the root of this whole situation going right back to the had times of 2007-2008 when everyone in Germany cancelled their trip to the beach.

Same thing happened to Spain when all of Britain decided to hold onto their money for a while and skip holiday.

If the EU is going to survive they will be required to eliminate the sovereignty of the members, thus eliminating theseindipendent choices. also mean that the EU must take on the responsibility of a uniform benefits and pension system, eliminate the ability of the States to acquire independent debt, and eliminate their ability to enter into treaties with outside nations.

The EU doesn't (at this time) have an army or any military force of any kind, and as you say there is no way the French or the Italians or the Spanish etc would want invade an ally.

Furthermore the issue with Greece is not technically an EU issue. The issue is related to the smaller Eurozone countries, of which the UK for example is not (fortunately) a member.

But to go back to the original question, then there has been a lot of talk about Russia helping Greece financially and in return being provided with a long term lease to enable the Russians to build a new military base and Naval Port in the Mediterranean / Europe!

And wouldn't Putin just love to be able to do that.....

Either

a. The EU will cobble together something with Greece,

b. Greece will get into bed with Putin (likely imho)

However do not ever underestimate the greek military.
A Salient point in history was 1967 when the Greel Junta took over.

This could happen again and then all bets are off.
