Hi, here in NZ, cans don't even have expiry or packing dates on. You have to contact company ( Watties/Heinz) to get info !
We put masking tape on top of can, then as you do, write purchase date on. Sometimes (rare) label can deteriorate, masking tape is cheap and will probably survive direct nuclear blast...
