Hygiene tip for now and after TSHTF
On another forum a chap from South Africa who spent 2 years studying in the UK expressed surprise that even in summer and mainly down south where biting and disease carrying insects can cause problems that so few people appear to have fly / bug screens on their doors even after decades of warnings about climate change bringing ever increased risks from semi and tropical diseases reaching the UK and being spread by insects, He mentions Malaria and Zeka but there are literally DOZENs of diseases and bacteria out there that could and probably would cause chaos if the normal public health and sanitation systems stopped working during a crisis, including unburied dead as seen laying around New Orleans for weeks after H Katrina, or just huge piles of uncollected and unburnt / buried domestic waste as seen during industrial action. Out of habit he said even when he was in Bournemouth he still used his mosquito net over his bed last summer and he never suffered mossy bites like others in his campus.

That got me thinking that WE should be using fly screens on our doors even now so as to get into the the habit and being comfortable having them around as they certainly cannot do any harm and they would certainly be essential in the summers during a crisis.

Just had a PM from a member to say they have got fine net / voil curtains on the WINDOWS they open the most often and when or if TSHTF they says they will tape the edges to the window frame to ensure no bugs come through the open windows.

From wiki:

"Mosquito netting can be made from cotton, polyethylene, polyester, polypropylene, or nylon.[6] A mesh size of 1.2 mm stops mosquitoes, and smaller, such as 0.6 mm, stops other biting insects such as biting midges/no-see-ums."

To be honest in the UK I'm not worried much about desease spread from bugs (apart from lyme disease) but if you do cut netting to size you can fit them to window frames with double sided sticky velcro tape which is cheap enough on ebay.

Another option is http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mil-Tec-Milita...3641.l6368 shop around and get them cheaper, use them on their own or on a 'cot' bed, we did both in Iraq and Afghanistan and they were needed out there. In the UK they work well under tarps, the sown in groundsheet makes sure your bug free.

I like that Harry, a lightweight camo tarp over the top basha style and you'd be well set up.

I had about 40 I think my kids mates all have one each because I only have about 5 left, they are good they are by design made to fit the UK army bed and also fit the yank one.

I bought so many to make arrows from the shafts for my crossbows.

Should be able to get them for about £25

They said grade 1 but all mine were brand new, still grade 1 is good.

DIY shops around here sell stainless steel fine weave mesh in rolls.

We've made frames with this mesh stretched over them that fit outside of inward opening windows. All very low tech, but they are effective.

I keep meaning to do the same with the main doors to outside, obviously with the frames being hinged to allow access. I'll get started on tis in the next few days. Thanks for the reminder NR.

What size are the holes in the SS mesh, not much use over 1.2mm apparently
