T1 Diabetes
When insulin is needed to survive, what is the best way for a diabetic to prep? My own plan is maybe a months supply of food etc and a stash of silver/USD to get us out of dodge to a more stable country. With the UK planning to shut borders in the event of a SHTF scenario involving the collapse of the euro, I don't feel too hopeful. Does this (or any other condition which forces a reliance on medication with a shelf-life) affect anyone else and what are you doing to prep?

can you get a supply? maybe put in your repeat prescription a little bit earlier each month?

The problem is that insulin has a stable shelf life.

The only thing I can think of is to find a way to manufacture insulin yourself. I'm pretty sure they use ecoli bacteria. But creating your own supply is the best I can think of.

REALLY careful diet, probably won't be enough. Especially with the increased physical activity during a SHTF scenario.

I know ways to get LOADS of insulin. But it is illegal. Insulin is the most anabolic hormone the body produces. If you found someone that sold steroids, you could get insulin off them. But that is not a recommendation as you cannot guarantee the quality and purity of what they would provide.

Stock up from your local doctor. Tell them you are going over to Australia, or doing a trek in the Amazon for 4 months. That's what I'm planning to do to get anti-biotics haha.
Please note, for legal reasons, I need to say that the above was not a recommendation or a suggestion, and that I do not, and will not, lie to my doctor to get loads of medication for a SHTF scenario, and neither should you.
Let's just take my response to this thread as being for entertainment purposes only. For legal reasons.

Well Sir that is a very difficult issue and depends just how much time money and resources you can invest to protect the T1 diabetic, In the novel " One Second After" and the novel " Lucifers Hammer" both the characters with T1 diabetes expired early because they had no insulin natural or made made to help balance their blood sugars and ketones etc.

However my wife is a clinical diabetes specialist and she advises me thus.
Insulin will generally last for up to one month out of a fridge, New batches on insulin depending on the type and manufacturer can (possibly) last for up to a year or the use by date on the bottle ( If Refrigerated). Insulin used after its expired will still work for a while longer but you will find it wont work as well or for as long so may be needed more often or in larget doses. Refer to your GP ( All Caveats Apply).

The only other option is for the diabetic or their family to learn how to extract insulin from Cattle and Pigs as they did in the early part of the 20th century before synthetic insulin was developed. One book reported a family relocating in the US to be next to a farm so they could extract insulin from the slaughtered animals and process it themselves.

i dont know about Diabetes but a lot of medical conditions will change after TSHTF and SOME but not all will get better, you will be eating different foods, less if not no processed food and getting more exercise.

I think that anyone who needs meds for anything, including diabetes, is in big trouble if they cannot make it themselves or control it another way. We talk years in survival terms, these people are talking months and even then it is one continual worry.

We need to find a way or we won't be seeing many of these people three months down the line.

As far as silver and gold go. I have simple views;
What are you going to buy with it? - Try buying that now.
How long does it keep before you can't eat it?
Exactly what is the person you intend to barter with going to do with it?
How much is a loaf of bread, a rabbit, a gallon of water in gold or silver?

I think you are better off with other items for an event.

It's a sad fact but one that has to be faced, some of our nearest and dearest may die due to lack of meds, sure I read some thing about Diabetics dying after Katrina coz they were stuck with no aid 3/7? days. I'm Diabetic but can control with diet so I store my metformin tablets, but anyone who is insulin dependant won't stand much of a chance less a way is found to make your own

Bit tired can't see the post about when there is no Doctor, but at the back of the book there are reference pages one of them covers this, think it gives a web site to how they used to extract insulin, worth having a look, I'll post it when I've had some sleep if you can't find it

RE: T1 Diabetes
Thanks guys. Our preps are very much short term due to the T1 diabetes. Built into our preps are plans for escaping the UK to a safer place, assuming it's something like a euro/economic catastrophe & medical supplies are interrupted (and assuming we can get out). Anything more catastophic/long-term and, tbh, there's not much we can do.
