3D Solar Panels
All this recent talk of new technologies got me thinking of something I've been meaning to post for a while now...

https://futurism.com/mit-building-3d-sol...l-results/

3D Solar Panels - I've been eagerly awaiting a commercially available product since I first came across this innovation on or around 2011, but alas there still seems to be no company making them yet. Given that MIT state they foresee 3D panels giving 20 times greater power, it should mean that a single 100 watt 3D panel would be equivalent to a 2000 watt convention panel, therefore one in the back garden should fully charge up say a 400AH Deep Cycle Battery in just a few hours, HOWEVER I've only yet seen one company that looked close to releasing 3D panels about a year ago and when I looked again a few months later, the web site had mysteriously vanished (can't remember the name of the site I’m afraid, it was Spanish or Portuguese I think).

Given the serious potential of this technology, the cynic in me suspects TPTB don't want the hoi polloi getting their hands on these babies for a good while yet.

Anyone else have any more information or updates on when this technology may be commercially released other than the standard press releases by MIT and others?

Interesting LAC.

Be careful about what they are saying. The 20x power is per sqm of footprint, not 20X the output of the cell itself.

But, from a prep point of view I like it. Mainly because I have an aversion to roof mounted panels. Such installations would be, I think, an irresistible attraction to those without electrical power after a major event. Being able to set up a high efficiency array at ground level in a secluded spot is very interesting to me.

Looking at the pics in the article, it should be possible to rig up something similar on a DIY basis. I bet that someone has already posted a how-to somewhere on YouTube.

"20x power per sqm of footprint"
Would you be kind enough to provide some more detail about that or provide a link/s?

The thing is this technology is like no other solar technology currently commercially available. The technology apparently works by mimicking the way a leaf on a tree works by capturing light from many angles, not just straight on like conventional PV panels. Of course leaves have had millions of years to evolve to be very efficient at doing so, therefore any PV technology that even comes close to copying that would be phenomenal.

From a prepping angle it would be fantastic imo,as so much easier to disguise.
