Glad you seem to be on top of the problem Jo. We had mice about a year and a half ago. You're right about rodents being smart, I watched them walk around the traps and even cocking their heads round the corner to see when I was coming (I kid you not). Yes it's essential to find the entry point, and in our case it turned out to be behind the new combi boiler we had fitted which wasn't as long as the old one and left a gap in the wall. I sealed that with a load of plastic bags in the large gaps then a load of plumbers seal over that, then put poison down, which they ate over a few weeks, but there was only a mild smell of decay for a week or so. No trace of them since and hope it stays that way.
