The suggestions are the kind of 'well duh' level of obviousness, but it's easy to overlook the obvious.

True, but I keep hoping to come across an unmarked source somewhere =]
I would cheat and simply check out the old Scottish cattle drovers routes from Scotland down to York, They always picked places to stop where they could easily find ground water to water their herds from. Give aways on maps are often names like Tan hill, Tanners bank, drovers rest, etc
Use dowsing rods, it's pretty easy Smile
