If you are after a cheap kit to put away, go to £1 shop during summer months. Rods, reels, spools of line, hooks, floats. Pretty much everything for a compact emergency fishing kit.
Td-it's all about the braid!!! Can pull a 50lb conger up and float fish freshwater with the same line! Make sure you clean your braid and fishing gear after each trip with hot water and it will last for ever. Only con is braid is as strong as hell as long as its being pulled but will snap on even the smoothest of rocks (but leader will solve this) I would go for 25lb braid and 30lb mono for leaders.
