I am certainly not an expert in the field axe's so wont recommend any, but...
I picked up a cheap wooden handled one from B&Q a couple of years ago. Once I learned how to sharpen it properly (it was fairly blunt out of the box but now as sharp as any of my knives) I have to say that a small axe is one of the most versatile and useful tools for a multitude of uses outside. If I only had a choice of taking one sharp thing with me in a bag I would choose the axe over all the other options.
