just a quick question how many people us old plastic bottles for storing dry food like rice, flour, oaks etc

the reason I'm asking is that at the moment I'm looking into the cheapest options as we very little spare cash but the OH doesn't drink tea or coffee and drinks cordial instead so as a result we have a constant supply of bottles that tend to go into the recycle bin.

One plan is to clean out, dry and use these instead of mylar for home storage maybe with some home made oxygen absorber from a thread that Tigs posted.

Some supplies will be in longer term storage the rest in a 1 year rotation ultimately

so was just wondering what experiences people had with a simular idea

Should work providing they are food grade of course, washed out, left to dry for at least a week in a dry roof, add food plus moisture absorbers, should work but make sure the lit is a very secure fit so for example before you screw the lid back on cover the hole with clingfilm.
Try an expirment first of course.

The important bits are
(A) its food grade plastic
(B) you get out and keep out all the moisture
© you store it some place dark and cool

The rice in bags will last as long as the 'best by date' or even longer, but bottling the rice gives you a few more storage options:- space saving, more robust and vermin proof, more portable and you can have a ready measured amount so that you have less wastage.Wink


Also you can save money by buying the massive bag of rice and de-canting it into the smaller bottles.
if your using oxi obsorbers be carefull they may collapse the bottle and break the seal at the top ...just try one to test first .....you create a vacume
Only store white rice as brown rice contains oil which will go rancid. Rancid rice could make you ill in a survival situation. Kenneth Eames.
