Its not a lot different to this country,.. ok, I know that we probably transport more by rail than the U.S. does, but an hour on any Motorway in this country will soon have you realising just how much of our own goods are transported by road,... look what the tanker drivers strike did to the transport network just a few years ago

you have to realise that the supermarkets have this "just in time" delivery system, ok normally it works fine, but if anything were to happen, like the fuel protests, our supermarkets would have empty shelves within 24/36 hours.
