Here's a kit for a 40m radio that is capable of 200 mile range using Single Side Band (SSB) speech mode.

It'll take some time to solder the kit together, which will be a good education in itself.

Cracking little radio Bob

I especially like teh £50 CW ( morse) transceiver, Pre-built and it even has an automatic morse keyyer in it. The Auto call feature would make a good distress beacon.
