I'm considering cultivating some fruit flies, or similar, to feed the grubs to the chickens and fish for protein. Beside Kurt Saxons paper on it I don't have any more info. Anyone got any advice/information/experience?

I grow maggots for fishing and chickens plus we let them in the compost for worms.

Place a whole or part of a chicken in a biscuit tin make a hole in the top of about 2 or 3 inches with in a few days the chicken will have been blown full of eggs. Cover the chicken with a damp newspaper a couple days later the eggs will hatch giving you plenty of maggots. If you can stand the smell uncover it and start the process over again. The worms are easy go to a tackle shop and buy tubs of worms and let get on with it.

Absolutely no knowledge or experience of this at all, other than knowing our chickens love em!!

Soldier fly sound very interesting, they automatically crawl up hill and can be made to feed themselves to the chickens / fish. Or, you could use the old trick og hangind a dead rabbit / fox / animal over the coop / lake and let the maggots drop off.

SD, You could take up Vermiculture which,of course, is breeding compost worms. A worm farm is easily constructed. Search for Worm city on the web for much more detail. When your worms multiply within a few months, feed the excess worms to your chicks, or go fishing. Meal worms too can be cultivated, but I know very little about these, other than these too will feed chickens. Kenneth Eames.
