Our state now has only 23 warships available to protect the UK and its food supplies, I actually remember John Knott defence minister saying back in 1990 that the UK needs 21 Warships alone just to protect the UK coastline. But in total we now only have 23. The article is interesting and relevant to our community because of the comments shown below

"Mr Arbuthnot warned the UK now stockpiles almost no food or fuel, instead becoming dependent on regular supplies from overseas."

He who trusts and relies on the UK government is likely to end up very disappointed and very hungry if TSHTF

"Take a look around your estate when you go home tonight at all those houses rammed with people and now imagine what it would be like if all the supermarkets were empty for a week or two. It's not a question of if but when."
wow I didn't think the fleet had shrunk that much...this is the surface fleet I take it?
dosent surprise me, it wasn't only the Army getting cuts.
As of September 2013, there are 79 commissioned ships in the Royal Navy, plus 13 commissioned ships of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA). There are also 6 Merchant Navy ships available to the RFA under a private finance initiative. - Wikipedia.
if a country is stupid enough to rely on getting 60% of its food from sources outside the national borders then at some point in time there will be a problem in the supply chain(and not just food), didn't our modern little boy politicians study WW2 in university/college ?, what about Napolean "an army marches on its stomach"??? seems some people that ignore the mistakes of history are destined to repeat them.
The RN officers that I have had contact with over the years were (and probably still are) extremely competent and very fine seamen. They just have a hard time understand the speech of an American Coast Guard officer... Wink
We did not learn after the Crimea or Boer wars and disarmed, we did not learn after WW1 and had to do WW2 only 22 years later, the solid unmoving military strength of the west during the Cold War kept Europe peaceful til 1990. We fought only proxy wars in Asia, African and South America. As soon as the peace dividend was done Yugoslavia kicked off.

Strength and fear are the only things bullies such as Stalin, Kruschev, Bush, Putin, Hussain etc understand. Show weakness and there is always a Dictator / Oligrach / Oil Baron or Totalitarian waiting to move.

And weakness is exactly what the west is showing to Putin now. You can almost hear him chuckling to himself as the west bans another russian official from flying. It's starting to get like the old times - except this time Putin has his hands on the energy switch and the wests leaders don't have the balls to stand up to him. Interesting times ahead.
The last time a Russian fleet arrived off the coast of Scotland it took a fishing boat to raise the alarm and over 24 hours for a destroyer to be dispatched from Portsmouth. One destroyer against a Russian fleet including an aircraft carrier!! There are no major surface vessels based in Scotland despite the Trident home base being located here. The Russians could have landed by the time any sort of defence was organised.
Why would they want too?
