Fascinating subject. In short, would we be able to rebuild society (as it is) - no, I think not. Think about it, the population of the world is built mainly it is on the principle of quantity not quality. If most of it is decimated the chances of enough humans surviving with ability to rebuild to any degree of competence is likely to be small.
I'm inclined to agree with BP, and that is not being "negative", it's just seeing things for what they are.
Would I want to rebuild society as we know it - I'll pass on that one!
