So having been a non-tea person for 33.0142 years, I've discovered that I've been missing out, and I'm now I devoted tea imbiber...

I keep reading on the side of the twinnings boxes that it's all grown in India, China or Kenya... well that's no bloody to me. So I anyone growing their own tea plants? I know some on here grow tobacco amongst other things, so if anyone's got any pointers to growing tea please let me know. Where to get seeds, what kind of climate I need to create etc would be grand!

Thanks NR! Interesting reading. So it's possible to grow outside (location depending) which is good news. Time to hunt tinterwebs to find some seeds now and a bit more information.

You can grow anything you want if you can replicate the conditions required. Whether it's worth the time, effort and money is another matter

I understand that the tea plants need a certain amount of seasonability to grow successfully. They can tolerate a very slight frost, but do better in a warmer, humid athmosphere. I'm not sure you could grow them outdoors in the UK - although they are members of the camellia family.

No, Sunna, you probably coould not grow cocoa plants in the UK - not warm enough.

Churchill during ww2 started a programme in Cornwall to see if Britain could grow its own tea, the . Problem is it takes five years before it can be first harvested , as the program started in 1942 the war was over but it was harvested and was successful. With rationing still in Britain until the mid 50's other foods took precedent , but tea was continued to be grown in Cornwall and still is .
