I'm thinking of investing in home brew kits.
Life without the occasional weekend pint of liquid nectar would be rather dull and with the grain shortages predicted beer could become scarce.
Beer kits could be a good barter item.
Any recommendations, hints or advice?

I've never brewed beer, but I regularly brew wine. I don't generally use kits (although I have on a few occasions), just supermarket red grape juice and fresh frozen berries (blueberries, blackberries etc), wine yeast, and just plain sugar. It costs around £1 to £1.50 a litre, and is better than any supermarket wine up to the value of £10 a bottle, and don't forget standard wine bottles are only 700ml-750ml capacity. My mates love it. I try to get them to produce themselves but they lazy shites. New guy around recent barbecue could not actually believe my wine so good and so cheap could be made that way. I also brew mead and am actually having a glass right now. I've never looked back!
we gave up alcohol over 20 years ago, decided there were better things to spend our money on and we were right.
I've bought some gear to brew beer and alcohol and I'm going to be trying them both in the next few months. I've also got bees so plan to try some mead as well.
It's area like these that you realise how much knowledge is lost. In the instructions it talks about yeast and I have mine in packets atm while in the olden days they made everything from scratch. A learning curve approaches.

If you wish to insure a supply of beer because grain is going to be in short supply, what are you going to use to create the brew in your kit?
I would go with a wine kit myself. You can ferment anything with a little sugar in it. Anything from grapes to cactus squeezins.

In the UK you can purchase canned Homebrew kit that you just add yeast and water to, sometimes sugar. They have all the malted extract of the grain in the can.

What ever happened to nettle beer ? Dead simple and very refreshing ....pick some black berries ! Three pounds will make six bottles of red wine ....or parsnips for a crisp wine wine ....you can make wine from almost anything in your garden ......cider if you are desperado ....use stolen apples for the best possible taste and strength .
Started some blackberry and black currant wine this week ....parsnip will be up next then some apricot ! .........onwards !
