"C,mon North Yorks is not REALLY in the north, it starts at Thirsk in the east and Kendal in the west"

Most of Northumbria used be a part of Scotland under King Malcom until later in the Medieval period. Thats why from Richmond upward you will find many fortified houses. It was Border Country, with the locals being the Original Reivers!. Where you live NR is really Scottish! lol... Or even further back, it was one of the last hold outs of the Britons against the Saxon encroachment.. Now that is something to be proud about. You may have ancient warrior blood coursing through your veins.. or you could of been a cobbler?? Who knows? Big Grin

Northumbria as I was taught ran from Berwick to the Humber and was ran as a country by the Prince Bishops, Dont think I was royalty or clerical either, Its greatest asset is its never had any association with London Smile We still have our own flag and IIRC Northumbria has a greater claim to statehood than Wales !! not sure about that though Smile

eye, but Durham was a Scots stronghold until the Prince Bishops moved in. That is why they were sited there. That was in the middle ages when the English kings forces conquered the lower Scotland areas and pushed the border back up towards the Roman demarcation line.

A fierce warlike peoples of the area with a fantastic heritage. I could claim to be Northumbrian myself, and come from just north of the frictious Northumbrian/Mercian border. Shy

Anyway, sorry to digress, but Hello & Welcome to Mr Instructor. May your stay be merry & profitable. TL.
