RE: Turkey Attempted Military Coup - CharlesHarris - 19 July 2016

The condensed version for those who won't be bothered to read the article:

Erdogan knew about the coup well in advance, due to poor OPSEC by its planners. The coup was poorly planned by mid-grade officers with limited coordination.

Erdogan allowed the coup attempt to be launched with the express goal of using it to strengthen his grip on power and to eliminate the opposition. With Erdogan now firmly at the helm, the crackdown will be ruthless and unforgiving. Thousands of will be jailed - hundreds will be executed extra-judicially.

This spells the end of Attaturk's legacy and a return to some stylized fascist Ottoman fantasy.

Turkey is lost.

RE: Turkey Attempted Military Coup - Mortblanc - 20 July 2016

Attaturk's legacy was a strong government controlled by a strong man as central leader, with tight control over the military to insure against having to share power with the Caliphate.

How is that different from this?
