I’ve been in a similar situation, trying to find reliable walkie talkies for use in the woods. After trying out different models, I found that digital pocket https://www.radiowarehouse.com.au/collections/digital-radios works really well for short distances, even when there are trees and slopes. They’re easy to charge with USB, so using a solar charger is no problem. I’ve used them in spots where line of sight wasn’t great, and they’ve done the job without running out of battery too quickly.

You don’t say which model(s) you’ve tried, but it’s an Australian site, are they UK legal ?, do they ship to the UK ?, prices seam very high even at two dollars to the pound. Baofeng’s are a much better deal and easy to get.
