How do the 'cheap radios' work by covering all of the state of Columbia?

Is it like Chinese Whispers, where one person reports to the next who then sends it down a chain to the next and all the way round?

Yup. message is relayed from person to person until it finds it's destination.

That's really cool! I guess, if a radio had a couple of mile range, it should be pretty doable. Especially here in Bristol.
