Retreat Advice needed - Lightspeed - 5 November 2012

Well Mrs Lightspeed and I have finally concurred taht a proper retreat style home is to be sought in the new year.

I've just started drawing up my list of attributes we'll need in that building.

Please can I ask you guys who've been prepping for a long time to advise me if there are thinsg that I should add to my list?

Here's what we've come up with so far:

• Enough elevation to avoid flooding

• Isolated from other properties

• Set back from access roads, ideally hidden from them.

• Construction

o Older property, slightly run down looking better than holiday home refurbished look.

o Stone built lower ground storey with cellar

o One or two stories above in Brick or stone

o One or more open fires with chimneys in good repair.

o At least three bedrooms, Lounge and kitchen + 1 functioning bathroom with inside plumbed WC

o Big overhang on roof so that walls can be insulated on outside

o South facing large roof area for PV cells.

o Garage or space for garage and workshop for 2 vehicles

o Drinking water well in Garden

o Foundation of rock, suitable for Geothermal bore hole.

o Properly constructed cesspit

• Land fertile and large enough for small holding fruit and veg

• Close access to woodland

What have we missed? All thoughts and ideas appreciated.

Thanks SS.

Have you identified real properties that meet the criteria?

I'm guessing that my list is a wish list, and that there will be compromises to be made. How realsable is such a list i wonder?

Oh yes another thing on the list is to have some trees in the garden so that i can rig stealth antennas systems to them for my comms system.

lightspeed no matter where you end up, you are going to get unwelcome visiters your plan MUST include this FACT

Baked beans are useful for a lot of things aren't they.

Thanks for the advice. Its good and completely realistic.

How to dal with un-invited visitors will depend on the geograpy and location of the retreat.

But a good idea to consider this aspect when selecting, that's for sure.

Thanks again

Thanks BB, Devon would be excellent, we have great sense of attachemt especially to the north of the county.

Only snag is we'd have to live there more than 20 rears befor the label of foreigner would start to wear off!
