When I said about old carpet, I meant to cover over the beds around the plants to smother weeds, not to decay into compost. We've had the same bits of carpet in the garden for years, and they are not decaying any time soon.

Also, you might want to set up a wormery. I'm doing a full project post on the relevant forum section soon. The worms can be ed almost any compostable material, and produce the best growing medium. When spread into mulch around plants, they massively increase the yield of garden vegetables.

If you want to convert a piece of land for growing food especially no dig/ permaculture, consider keeping chickens on it first; they level out the ground, remove clumps of grass and weeds and put life back into the soil. When the grass grows back, it will be extremely healthy and thick!
