They use a the Peltier effect with a thermal diode: one side hot, one side cold =electric current. They are commonly referred to as a thermoelectric generator. Same idea as those fans that sit on the top of woodstoves using the heat differential in the room to provide the current to work the fan. Considering the diode cost is about £2 you can build one yourself quite cheaply. Thermal diodes tend not to be very efficient so it can take a long time to charge a battery.
