Fire Piston - Bjm - 15 November 2012 Hi, I was looking on the net for ways to make a fire and came across something called a Fire Piston. there for sale on ebay, and you tube show you how to make one. I have never heard of them before, has anyone else? http://www.survivaldepot.co.uk/Numyth_Vulcan_Fire_Piston/p474753_3929184.aspx RE: Fire Piston - Tarrel - 15 November 2012 I played with one at the Wilderness gathering the other year. It works by generating heat through the compression of air. It creates a small ember, a bit like you'd get from using a bow-drill. The ones I saw were machined out of steel. I'd rather use a fire-steel, tbh. RE: Fire Piston - Paul - 15 November 2012 One word, Ferrocerium. aka Firesteel, Blastmatch, and Metal-Match. Works everywhere, usually everytime, and lasts a long, long time. No moving parts and cheap (£3 upwards). You'll need char cloth or amadou fungus for tinder in a fire piston. It's got moving parts, and it doesn't like getting wet. IMO always K.I.S.S. (Keep it stupidly simple). RE: Fire Piston - Straight Shooter - 15 November 2012 ok but it would be nice to see the f.cking thing work don,t matter wifey,s toung ......i,ll never be without the means to make fire RE: Fire Piston - Scythe13 - 16 November 2012 This is one of my favourite gear review people.
