People in flood prone areas should follow the example of Trevor Baylis, the inventor of the wind up radio. He lives on an island in the Thames and has been flooded a few times. He has concreate floors, walls are plastered with cement rather than made from plasterboard with a skim of plaster on them and all of the electrics drop down the walls from the ceiling, rather than the cables being low in the wall.

When a flood is coming, move possessions to first floor - plan your space so you have less to move. After the flood, open the doors and windows, hose down with a hosepipe, space heater for a day or two rather than weeks, put possessions back and your good.

I like the idea, but I wonder if a floating house would have a limited life, after all you are restricted as to what can be used to build it with,..and a house that sits on land then floats if made of wood, would expand and contract,...I would be interested but I would have lots of questions,...least of all about insurance
