I cannot make this a rule but I saw many people with little self-esteem not
recovering from the initial shock and loss of control.
It makes sense. If you believe in yourself and your skills then you also believe
you can overcome problems or whatever gets in your way. It gives you
something to hold on to, even if everything else seems to be falling apart.
This is another purely mental reason why learning various survival skills
beforehand is so helpful. You not only learn how to do something. You also
become more confident in your ability to master new skills, and as a result
you gain self-esteem.
