It'll take about the same 'on fire' time to melt ice or snow down to 1 litre of water. The major time difference is in refilling the pot with the snow.

I get what you're saying Binnie, but in practice the difference is nearly negligable...but for the filling and cold hands every few minutes.

I would go for the ice rather than the snow, at least ice is water, there is very little water in a handful of snow,.... but in this country if you have ice, then you have water under it,.. [ in most cases ]
