on the subject of generators being quiet, a friend of mine has a whole house generator powered by natural gas and it is very quiet. in my opinion it's quieter than his honda civic running at idle. we cant afford that so we have a decent portable generator, have had it for 6 years and has come in handy many times. It can be heard for a city block though.
