Handy Skills to Learn(draft) - NorthernRaider - 11 August 2013

*This is just a rough draft of a new advice list I'm creating to be the first update to the new version of my Family Prepping Guide, all comments welcome

Handy Skills to Learn
You don’t need to be an expert or master of your craft to improve your chances of survival after a disaster or societal collapse but the more useful skills you can pick up over the year the better chances you have of remaining safe, self-reliant and operational in the period following the event.

1. First aid skills
2. Safe firefighting techniques
3. Map and Compass navigation skills (to 6 or 8 figures)
4. Camp and improvised cooking skills
5. 2 way radio knowledge and operation (CB and Amateur)
6. Swimming and safe water crossing skills
7. Basic wilderness survival skills including shelter building and fire lighting
8. Basic vehicle maintenance and diagnostic skills
9. Basic safe electrical skills
10. Horse / pony saddling and riding
11. Animal husbandry
12. Food preserving skills
13. Veg growing skills
14. Basic teaching skills
15. Safe rifle handling, use, maintenance and skill at arms training
16. Basic archery skills course, compound and recurve
17. Sewing and darning
18. Basic carpentry and wood working
19. Trapping and snaring
20. Basic boat handling and sailing skills
21. Motorcycle, Car and Truck driving licence’s
22. Long distance and off road cycling skills
23. Expedition planning skills inc route planning
24. Roping skills , climbing, towing, raft making etc

Other useful skills and crafts should also be encouraged from weaving, knitting, spinning, carving, saddlry, leather working, darning, tinning, salting, pickling, coppicing, smithing etc the more the merrier.

I can see 2 or 3 I wouldn't be using as i'm going more for the subsistence level type existence, could add: no electric/no power so buy, learn to use and maintain, basic hand tools including hand saws, chisels, bit and brace drills and hand drills.
