MK 4 & MK 6 fen traps - BFG Central - 15 August 2013

I was wondering if anyone else has used fen traps before?
MK4 fen traps are rated for squirrels and rat.
MK6 fen traps are stronger and rated for rabbits and mink.
They are tunnel traps.
For catching rabbits which will probably be most peoples quarry you loosen the soil inside the mouth of the rabbit hole and set the trap and them recover with loose soil.
When the rabbit walks across the pressure plate the rabbit is dispatched.

The plus side to this trap that your catch is covered from other people who might otherwise steal your catch.

Care must be taken to limit your human scent left around the rabbit hole but this can be covered with the use of peppermint water. (also useful for setting snares)

For squirrels use a wooden tunnel or make shift brick tunnel as they can resist diving for cover and investigating tunnels.
Just make sure there is enough room for the traps to close as they need a fair bit of height.
The only other thing is to make sure you peg or attach the chain for the trap securely or a fox may run off with your catch and your trap never to be seen again.

Great traps, just remember that if you mail-order them they might come already set ( makes a smaller parcel ). I found this to my cost, my thumb was sore for a week.

Please be aware that there are copies of the fen traps floating around.
I will say iv had some and they are almost as strong as my original ones and they still dispatch large rats very well.
Make this seller an offer below £10 and he will probably come back with a counter offer just over the £10 mark
These are very good copies

Also that a price for 5 traps. Not 1

There are a few videos on youtube showing how to use them correctly

I totally agree mate.
Another way to cover your scent is peppermint water on your hands and gloves, Its an old poachers trick. This was done because traps and snares would only be put down last thing at night and picked up at first light the following morning.

Peppermint water is just that, peppermint leaves and water in a bottle.
Sometimes it was heated in a pan close to boiling point to extract more smell from the leaves.
Then poured into a small bottle to take out into the field.

Sending a trap out like that is insanely irresponsible. At TrapBarn we always send out Fenn Mark4 singles with a cable tie (zip tie) that acts like a second safety. The tie holds both the jaw and safety down.

An alert notice points the user to our web site where they can view the video and read the instructions. have a look https://www.trapbarn.com/setting/

This certainly prevents negative feedback on Ebay

As with any trapping, minimizing human scent is CRUCIAL.

Check out our web site page for tips on this.

Then there is always the need to prep your Fenn traps
