Funny, I was looking at alcohol to provide this function. Looking at alcohol engine conversions.

But people have been making alcohol for centuries and if wood gas won out then there must be a reason.

Yup Wood gas systems are usually installed as part and parcel of the vehicle, IE they put a gasifier in the load bed of the pickup used on DDP and pipe the gas straight into the engne, where as ethyl alcohol is usually produced seperately in a still type device away from the vehicle.
