Great article, thanks.
I would thoroughly recommend adding some red wool to attach to lure or bait. Fish think is is a blood trail.
Works a treat.

Old post, still useful. Having god quality fishing gears is very essential to keep you alive during fishing.

I'm going to die if I go fishing without having the correct "outfit"?

I have cough fish with only hook, line and sinker, a few time with spears, once with a woven basket and several times with only my bare hands!

Never once did I die.

Not due to being badly equipped while fishing anyway. The greatest risk of fishing was to go night fishing and come home with nothing! There would be questions!

Best rig for stealth night fishing is a WW2 crank dynamo field telephone. Never fails.

Is there a mandatory outfit you wear with that CH?

Perhaps just a patch for your hat or something official?

Most fun I ever had fishing was sitting on the bank with my Grand dad, midnight, a big Coleman lantern blazing away, fishing poles of river cane, slapping 'skeeters. I was probably dressed in jeans, tee shirt and "Keds". We did that all summer every summer until I went and made the mistake of growing up.

We would bait the hooks with bologna left over from our sandwiches and generally take home enough fish for supper the next night.

Survival fishing is completely different to everyday fishing, the idea is to get as much fish to eat in as little time as possible, so forget pole fishing, thats okay for sport fishermen and people who arent starving, in a survival context leaving a baited line with many hooks out overnight or using some form of trap will be the norm.

You will actually find that in the archeological context, when all fishing is survival fishing, hooks and lines are common due to who is doing the fishing. Most of those hooks are made from bone and shell by simple fracturing and grinding, and they are present very early in the strata of human remains.

Fishing, even in survival situations or basic subsistence hunting and gathering is an activity where the marginal people in the group can still contribute to the whole. The old folks, women, and the kids go fishing. So do people convalescing (apparently there were a lot of those) from injury or even the crippled. They are not hampered by time/production constraints and the old people are often looking after the kids, so they go fishing and bring home the occasional meal.

While the young adult men are out chasing the bison, wildebeest, horses, red deer and mammoths, sometimes gone for weeks on long hunts, gran-pa is out with the kids providing several pounds of aquatic protein resources daily.

That is not speculation, it is information gathered by anthropologists in the field and historical record.

It is the same with "hunting" in a survival setting. Today hunting is considered recreation. In a subsistence setting one never leaves the home without their rifle and knife, not necessarily as defensive weapons, but as food gathering tools. Walking the fence line and checking the stock, or even going out to milk, is when you jump small game that makes your supper.

This is one of those cultural divergences between farming in GB and the U.S. One of those thing you don't "understand". Over here the tradition is still strong and farmers often carry a pistol on their hip or present the "redneck" illusion of the shotgun in the truck window. They are not trying to prove anything, they just intend to take home supper if it makes an appearance.

I know several of those shotgun toting "rednecks" that have graduate degrees in agribusiness. They will tell you quickly that eating free venison is better than consuming beef you can sell at $20/kilo.

one minute we are talking about fishing-as in the thread title- then it wanders into hunting and beef prices.
one can make anything sound good by diverting from the subject at hand.

Sorry Paul, but if I feel like using sentences with more than three words and expanding explanations that is what I will do.

Just because you did not understand the post does not mean it was wrong.
